Police in Kentucky are searching for the shooter after up to seven people were injured on a rural section of a major highway. The victims were driving along the road shortly before 6 p.m. local time (10:00 GMT) near London, as reported by the town’s mayor, Randall Weddle, on Facebook.

Kentucky State Police spokesman Scottie Pennington initially reported that between four and six people had been injured. According to local news station WYMT, there were "multiple severe injuries," but no confirmed fatalities.

The shooting caused a temporary closure of Interstate 75, a major north-south highway that runs through the eastern part of the US, in both directions.

Authorities are currently searching for 32-year-old Joseph Couch in the rugged terrain near the highway. Local media indicated that the gunfire appeared to have originated from a wooded area or an overpass.
