Frankie Beverly, the legendary frontman of the band Maze, known for his smooth, soulful voice and timeless anthems like "Before I Let Go," has passed away at the age of 77.
In a statement shared on the band’s website and social media, his family announced his passing on Tuesday, requesting privacy. They described Beverly as having "lived his life with a pure soul" and added, "no one did it better." The statement did not provide details on his cause of death or where he passed.
Beverly, whose hit songs include "Joy and Pain," "Love is the Key," and "Southern Girl," completed his farewell “I Wanna Thank You Tour” in July in his hometown of Philadelphia. That same month, the Essence Festival of Culture in New Orleans honored Beverly and Maze with a special tribute. For the first 15 years of the festival, they closed out the event, where Beverly’s performances would ignite the crowd, many of whom wore white, just like the singer himself often did.
Frankie Beverly’s artistry went beyond music; it was the fabric that wove together our shared memories and moments of happiness," the festival’s organizers said in a statement. "His melodies will live on in our hearts and continue to inspire for generations to come.
