The Houthis have claimed responsibility for downing a US military drone over Yemen, marking the latest incident in a series of attacks by the group. These actions have disrupted shipping trade through the critical Bab al-Mandeb Strait and prompted US military responses.

In a display of solidarity with Palestinians during Israel's ongoing 11-month conflict with Gaza, the Yemeni group has launched numerous attacks on ships with ties to Israel.

Yahya Saree, the military spokesman for the Houthi group, announced in a prerecorded video released early Sunday that the MQ-9 Reaper drone was shot down by their air defenses over Marib while "carrying out hostile activities."

He claimed this marks the eighth drone of this type to be downed since the Gaza conflict began. The group has not yet released any footage of the downed drone, which is valued at approximately $30 million.

These advanced drones, capable of reaching altitudes up to 15,240 meters (50,000 feet) and flying for up to 24 hours, have been used by US military and intelligence forces over Yemen for years. This includes the period of civil war that erupted following the Houthi rebellion against the government in late 2014, with fighting largely subsiding after a UN-brokered ceasefire in December 2023.

Saree stated that Houthi forces will continue their attacks in support of Palestinians and are "in the process of strengthening defensive capabilities" to counter ongoing joint air strikes by the US and UK on Yemen.
